Nestled in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a hiker’s paradise, offering scenic wonders, abundant wildlife, and countless outdoor activities. The most-visited US national park straddles the border of Tennessee and North Carolina, showcasing must-see sights and unforgettable drives. From Gatlinburg’s bustling attractions to Mount LeConte’s tranquil peaks and Bryson City’s train excursions, the Smokies has plenty to offer.

Tennessee.

Your adventure begins in Gatlinburg, Tennessee—a lively mountain town brimming with outdoor attractions, cozy restaurants, and unique shops. A highlight is Anakeesta, an outdoor adventure park that features a treetop skywalk, exhilarating mountain roller coasters, and thrilling zipline courses. To get to the summit, visitors can take the scenic chondola ride or hop in a shuttle van. Once there, relax in tranquil garden areas, savor snacks and drinks at the cafés, or simply marvel at the views.

Nature.

The Smokies are renowned for their hiking trails, wildlife encounters, and waterfalls.Visitors should maintain a safe distance from wildlife such as black bears and elk, as this is their natural habitat (and fines are enforced for violations). A favorite among locals and tourists is Abrams Falls, a 5-mile round-trip, moderate hike that rewards visitors with a roaring 20-foot waterfall. For a more magical experience, the Grotto Falls Trail allows you to walk behind a cascading waterfall—a refreshing treat on hot days.

For seasoned adventurers, the Mount LeConte Trail is a must. This steep, 10-mile round trip hike challenges hikers with its ascent but rewards them with a cozy lodge at the summit, offering meals and accommodations. Watching the sunrise from the lodge’s vantage point is an experience you’ll never forget.

Kuwohi, the park’s highest point at 6,643 feet, boasts panoramic views from its observation tower. On a clear day, you can see seven different states from this Cherokee sacred spot (Kuwohi is the Cherokee name for the mountain, formerly known as Clingmans Dome). The short but steep paved trail to the tower is worth every step. Another can’t-miss spot is Newfound Gap, where history and nature collide. This is where US President Franklin D. Roosevelt officially dedicated the park in 1940, and its sweeping vistas make it a memorable stop.

North Carolina.

On the park’s North Carolina side, Bryson City offers visitors the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad. This scenic train ride through the breathtaking Nantahala Gorge runs year-round, making it a must-see attraction. Nearby, the town of Cherokee provides a unique opportunity to explore the cultural heritage of the Eastern Cherokee tribes.

Whether you’re seeking rugged trails, stunning wildlife, or peaceful escapes, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a destination that leaves every visitor inspired.
