Top 10 Dining Areas of 2023

  • 12/28/23
These days, apart from kitchen island seating, home dining areas can range from the slightly more formal eat-in kitchen setup to the much more formal traditional dining room. No matter what you’re trying to achieve, you’ll find creative ideas for bringing style and function with this countdown of the most-saved dining areas of the year.

Level Studio

10. Clever Repurposing

The jumping-off point for this Mississauga, Ontario, dining room’s design was the homeowners’ wish to salvage their old kitchen countertop as a tabletop. Level Studio used it to top off a classic tulip base. From there, beautifully curved chairs complement the table while custom millwork frames the artwork. The pièce de résistance is the striking glass-and-brass light fixture overhead.

9. Eat-In Bay

Simply Home Decorating made the most of a bay in this North Vancouver, British Columbia, kitchen. A built-in bench has deep storage drawers beneath it. And the oval tabletop and tulip base make it easy to gather round and enjoy the view.

8. Bench Wrap

Jennifer Wundrow Interior Design maximized the space in this Novato, California, kitchen with a built-in dining bench. This one wraps around the corner on two sides of the table. Because the homeowners have young children and dogs, Wundrow used performance fabric on the cushion and faux leather on the chairs, both of which will stand up to wear and tear.

Saffron Case Homes

7. Pattern Play

This Montecito, California, dining room is open to the living room. Saffron Case Homes used a similar color palette and visual language to create a cohesive flow between the two. At the same time, a boldly patterned wallpaper gives the dining room its own distinct identity. Shapely dining chairs, sculptural ceramics and a Noguchi light fixture play off the wallpaper’s graphic squiggles.

House of Jade Interiors

6. First Impressions

This dining room is located directly off the Salt Lake City home’s entry, so House of Jade Interiors knew it needed to make a strong first impression. The oversize woven chandelier makes a big impact, while a mix of chairs brings additional textures into the room.

Hendren House

5. Tailored Traditional

It’s hard to believe this Wayne, Pennsylvania, dining room was a garage before the designers at Hendren House got their hands on it. French doors and substantial moldings and wainscoting set a tailored, traditional tone. Meanwhile, the botanical wallpaper, linear brass chandelier and patterned rug layer in personalized flair.

ADINA HALL DESIGN

4. Good Energy

Health, wellness and sustainability were priorities for a Chicago townhome renovation by A&M General Contracting. Designer Adina Hall employed feng shui principles in the design, including the dining room. “We wanted to create a grounding space, so we chose a palette rooted in earth tones,” she says. “Brown is a grounding and nourishing color that’s connected to stable earth energy, while green is an uplifting color that promotes fresh energy and renewal.”

Cathie Hong Interiors

3. Minimalist Mix

Contemporary Australian design inspired the architecture and interiors of this San Francisco home. Accordingly, Cathie Hong Interiors juxtaposed warm wood furniture with the cool concrete floors and white walls.

KES Studio

2. Beverly Hills Haute

Fans of the TV show Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles will enjoy getting a peek at real estate agent Tracy Tutor’s elegant dining room. KES Studio balanced California ease — organic textures, curves, warm wood — with modernized Old Hollywood style — French doors, pleated window treatments, white bouclé, metallic shine — to compose the luxurious Beverly Hills room.

Maya Axt Interiors

1. Fresh Perspective

Maya Axt Interiors carefully considered the view from the entry when designing this Phoenix dining room. The boldly striped rug, ceiling beams and symmetrically placed display cabinets point the eye to a beautiful landscape painting. Supporting players include a reclaimed-pine table, a mix of chairs and a sculptural chandelier.
